To increase your website's ranking with search engines, it is very important to use keywords you have chosen in the title of the page concerned. A title tag is of course not the same as a meta description or keyword tag, but it is still a very important factor to consider in the overall optimization of your web page.

Any text you insert in your title tag will be viewed in the title bar of browsers at the time they visit your site. To take advantage of this, plan your keywords and theme carefully. You may also find that some browsers will add their own name as an appendage to your own text.

As one of the most important deciding factors in how search engines chose to rank your page is the actual text you have placed in the title tag, spend time and thought over your choice of words. The major web spiders will normally use the text of your title tag as the text that is used for the title given to your site in the listings.

This text will act in much the same way as a newspaper headline, and draw your prospective client to look at your site, while also setting the theme and topic.

Consider also that if your site has been constructed as a series of sites, or linked pages, then you will need to apply these search engine optimization techniques to each page individually. The keywords used in the text of each page title will be the magnet that draws traffic to the site.

You should ensure that you avoid the use of stop words such as "at", "and" and similar in the crucial first three positions for keywords. Care taken here will dramatically increase your results in the rankings.

Your choice of text should be aimed at producing a unique combination of your chosen keywords, phrases, and content. Ensure that you capture every keyword or phrases you need to highlight for each service, product, or information page.

It is always important to strike a balance between including sufficient keywords in your text, and at the same time avoiding becoming a keyword spammer, which will have a detrimental effect on your page rankings.

A key mistake often made by inexperienced business owners when designing their initial website is to use their firm's name, or business name, in the title of each page. Most potential clients will have never heard of your company before they come to your site, so the chances of them using your company name as a search word are remote.

It is a very good idea to have your business name in the title of your home page, but after that it may well be a waste of important space and keywords to include it on each individual page on the website. By using your chosen important keywords instead, you will find your site will be displayed nearer to the top listings on the search engines.

Did you ever think of SEO as a social activity?  Typically, it's people posting to social networking sites, posting to blogs, submitting to directories, and tweaking away at the site code.  It turns out that SEO is becoming a social activity.  Aaron Wall put out a video on this very subject.  I highly recommend it.  There is a lot of good information there.

 

Any subject can be used to drive traffic.  In the midwest, we recently had an earthquake.  In California, that may be a daily occurance, but in the midwest, it rarely happens, so it's big news.  All you have to do is connect the dots for the reader.

I just wrote a post on my SpendingLess101.com blog about the midwest earthquake.  You are probably wondering how an earthquake could be related to spending less money.  When attempting to tie subjects together, you have to open your mind; thing broadly.  You may even need to ask some friends to give you some ideas. As I said in the title, any subject can be used to drive traffic (and, anything can be tied to anything else).  Here are some examples of tying two seemingly-unrelated subjects together:

• Pizza / Bubbles:  Although the .com bubble has burst, a lot of pizza companies are finding additional business through online orders.
• Lawn Mower / Baseball:  The LawnBoy SuperMax Mower is a revolution to the lawn mowing industry, much like the original lawn mower was to the baseball field.
  

Just use a little creativity and you can ties subjects together.

Based on what I've said, you can now see how earthquakes and spending less money can go together.  While it took a while for me to put the two together, once the idea hit, it was so obvious.

When you are planning on make a good idea into a great blog or web site, you need to make sure that you don't slack off and let the tension go out of the line.  What I mean is you need to continue to work on the blog on a daily basis.  At the beginning of each week, I create a to-do list for the week for the promotion and content efforts of my various sites.  There are some things that need to be done on a regular basis and there are new things that I try each week. 

Here is a typical weekly schedule:

Tuesday

• Drop 300 EntreCards then use ec credits to advertise on EntreCard member sites
• Submit RSS feed to 10 RSS directories (track)
• Check affiliates for new promotions
• Add content:  Create 2 new blog posts including keywords from affiliate text ads.
• Visit related blogs, read content, and leave 5 comments
• Submit new blog posts to social networks using socialposter.com or socialmarker.com

Wednesday

• Drop 300 EntreCards then use ec credits to advertise on EntreCard member sites
• Add content:  Create 2 new blog posts including affiliate text ads and related information.
• Submit Blog to 10 blog directories (track)
• Visit related blogs, read content, and leave 5 comments
• Submit new blog posts to social networks using socialposter.com or socialmarker.com

Thursday

• Drop 300 EntreCards then use ec credits to advertise on EntreCard member sites

• Look for a girlfriend that is beautiful and computer savvy

Things do not always work out and sometimes, things get missed.  If I miss something on one of the days, I move that item to the next day (except the EntreCard tasks due to daily limits -- missing a day is a lost opportunity).  This can usually only be done once before there are too many things backed up in order to be able to catch up.

Every once in a while, I will dedicate a day to one particular thing that I think may be lacking, like using a day for reading and commenting only or using a day to write, write, and write some more.  

Quality content and consistent promotion are the keys in promoting a web site or blog.

 

Get people to read your blog posts by putting provocative titles on them like the one on this post.  Sometimes, the horse can't find the water on it's own.  It needs to be led.  Once there, your readers can drink from the fountain of your knowledge.

Before I get to the meat of this post, let me tell you now that you will NOT be able to actually grab microsoft.com's traffic for yourself.  I used that title as an example of what this post is about, which is using expired domains to drive traffic to your site.  Besides, Billy G. would never let microsoft.com expire.

There are a ton of articles out there that profess the benefits of purchasing expired domain in order to utilize the traffic remaining on those domains.  In How To Snatch An Expiring Domain, Mike Davidson tells all about his first experience with an expired domain.  He indicated that he purchased the domain for $18.95 and in two and a half months, made $369.  Another article, posted by Mike Santiago on MakeMoneyOnTheInternet.com, talks a lot about not only the existing traffic, but about building the domain up so it can eventually be sold for a higher price.  Although a lot of the articles out there talk about making money on the site through parking, you can also 301 redirect that traffic to your site, as long as the subject is related.

Grabbing this traffic is like picking up the money someone has left on the table.  I am doing this (just started so I have not made any money yet).  Give it a try.

A 301 redirect is a method of redirecting a request for one particular page to an alternate URL.  This method indicates to the search engines that the redirection is permanent.  This is as opposed to a 302 redirect (temporary redirect).  301 redirect is of benefit to the site owner because the search engines will not look upon the redirection as a trick or duplicate content.  It will see it as a valid redirection and it will go to the new site to pick up content.

Some uses for 301 redirect are:

• You purchase a new domain and you want to move all of your blog's content there.  In order to not lose your search engine ranking, you should 301 redirect all existing URLs to the respective location on the new site.
• You want to split the content up on one site into multiple sites.  The specific content going to new sites should be 301 redirected.

OFFICIAL RELEASE

The ICANNIWILL agency has decided to modify the method used to calculate the age of web sites.  Currently, the calculation is made from the first day the URL was registered and is counted in years.  As of 4/1/2008, the way that calculation is made has changed.  The start date of the site will remain the same, however, the age of the site will now be calculated in Dog Years.  This change is being made because of the inflation.  Here is an example using the new calculation:

www.justanothersitewithads.com was purchased on 6/1/2005.  If the calculation was made on 6/1/2007, it would produce a value of 14 years old.

Here are some unconventional site promotion ideas I came up with yesterday:

1. Bathroom stall wall
2. Tape a note to your own back
3. Have the phone company change the name on your callerID to your web address
4. Create an email account like www.spendingless101.com_@gmail.com and use that to send out all of your emails.
5. Use your web address as your account on Windows Live Messenger, then log on and off periodically throughout the day.  Your buddies will see your web address pop up in the lower right hand corner of their screen, which will entice them to visit your site.
6. Print up flyers with only your web address on it, then pay some kids .02 per flyer to put them on cars at your local mall.  (I actually like this one)
7. Give your kids some chalk, take them to a grocery store, and have them write the web address on the ground in front of the exit door.
8. Pay a skywriter to write the web address in the sky above a croweded baseball stadium...preferably NOT on a windy day (visitors may end up at a porn site).
9. Write your web address on all of the paper money you come across (actually, this one has already been done - www.wheresgeorge.com)
10. When sending out emails, highlight meaningless characters, and hyperlink them to your web site.
11. (Bonus) Take a permanent marker and write the web address on every car in the parking lot where you work.
